Heritage Community of Kalamazoo (HCK) is committed to providing care to people with Dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The two memory care programs on the campus provide a "continuum within a continuum" for individuals with very special care needs.
Dementia is a challenging condition characterized by a loss of or decline in memory and other cognitive abilities. It is caused by impaired and/or damaged brain cells resulting from various diseases and conditions. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, and accounts for up to 80% of all diagnosed cases. Caring for a person with Alzheimer's or other dementia is a difficult experience and the changes occurring in the person can overwhelm family, friends, and caregivers.

Given the current and anticipated demand for Alzheimer's disease care services, HCK is planning a needed expansion of our memory care program by renovating a portion of one of our current facilities, Directors Hall, into a specialized Memory Care Center. We are currently seeking funding support to help with this greatly needed expansion project that will create (17) additional rooms for specialized memory care. We anticipate opening the Center in March 2010.
