Normal aging and changing health problems frequently affects the functional status of older adults. As professionals, it is our goal, everyday, to maximize each resident's functional independence balanced with their need for safety in order to support the well-being of our residents. Heritage Community of Kalamazoo (HCK) is committed to creating a supportive, proactive and innovative safety environment that supports our mission regarding our resident's ability to maintain dignity and quality of life.
We offer several fitness programs and activities including:
"From my wheelchair, it's been easier for me to get in and out of a car. In my apartment, getting up from my "Hoveround" when I need to is easier and less painful. My friends say I have more stamina." Rita Redmond
"My flexibility has improved. Because I can't walk without a walker because of spinal stenosis etc., it is important to keep my good flexibility. I am keeping my strength. I know the value and importance of regular exercise." Harriet Gaston
"My balance and overall strength has improved leading up to higher levels of fitness. I am not into a competitive urge to out do others. At 88 years of age I maintain my body with respect for what is possible in agility and feeling good after working out." Marian Stoddard
"I can lift a gallon of milk with one hand. Went from one pound to three pounds. I can sit and stand fifteen plus times now." Name not given
"Since I have been in this class I've noticed that I shower with greater comfort and confidence because of gains in strength, balance and flexibility. I am able to enter and leave the shower more easily. I have also noted improvement in other aspects of my life - in helping my disabled adult son and in preparing meals. In addition, the classes are enjoyable and the instruction is excellent." Joanne Zelder
